Default Jerry Dodgion

Last word I heard, Jerry Dodgion was still playing his tail off and promoting a CD he released this year, Joy of Sax which features him and sax section with rhythm section. There's even a cut on it entitled, Quill. What I have heard is excellent!

Yes, Jerry is still doing it! He always sounded great. Quill is Phil's tune, but Jerry's arrangement. I've got to see if we have a copy of the CD!

Default Joy Of Sax

Well I found the Joy of Sax CD by Jerry Dodgion and the arrangement of Quill is also by Phil. Just FYI.

Default My Solo of the Day!!

Sorry to delve into the land of the obscure but Patrick Williams' "An American Concerto" featuring Phil with the London Symphony is my choice for today...."With the Messengers of Joy" is awesome (as are the other two movements). As far as I know, this has never been reissued on CD by Columbia. What's wrong with those guys??!!

Word is that the LSO gave Phil a standing ovation at the end of the recording session!! If you don't have this LP, get it.

Love and peace,
Rev

Default Soli of the Day/Happy Holidays

Rev,
That's not so obscure, I was just listening to American Concerto the other day. How about the ensemble work on Pony Poindexter's version of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" off the Jingle Bell Jazz Album. (Phil, Quill, Pony, Dexter Gordon, Billy Mitchell, and Pepper Adams)

And in the same spirit, I would like to wish Phil, Jill and all the rest of you Philophiles a Cool Yule and a Frantic First.

Default Donna Lee

I've always loved how Phil tears into Donna Lee. There's a great version he did with Billy Taylor on Billy's NPR show, but I think that probably is too obscure to find in everyone's collection. As a more widely available selection, I suggest we listen to Phil and Richie Cole play Donna Lee on their recording "Side by Side"

Default Phil wails on "Donna Lee"- Marty Paich style!

Scooby,
Just wait until you hear the soon to be released CD Phil Woods "Groovin' to Marty Paich" on my Jazzed Media label. Phil has a ball with "Donna Lee" and 11 other great Marty Paich arrangements including fantastic renditions of "Groovin High", "Moanin'", "Round Midnight", "Violets For Your Furs" and other jazz classics.
Phil is joined by a host of great LA musicians and the band is lead by Christian Jacob. The live recording was made earlier this year in LA.
The CD master just went to the factory this week. Release date will be March, 2005.

Default Can't Wait!

Graham,

Thanks for the good news! I can hardly wait for the CD (and upcoming DVD as well). You and Phil delivered what is easily the best CD of 2004 with the Quincy project. I'm looking forward to the 2005 projects!

Since you mentioned 'Round Midnight, I suggest we make that the solo of the day. My recommended version is from "Our Monk" on Philology.

Default Phil and Herbie

My suggestion for today is Phil's recording with Herbie Mann. How about we start with "Bohemia After Dark". Since we'll have the CD in the player, I'd also suggest "Blood Count" for yet another masterful Phil Woods ballad performance.
