Default Bird Lives!

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Bird's passing, I suggest we listen to "Charles Christopher" from the "I Remember" recording.

My introduction to Phil was the recording of "I Remember Bird" by Oliver Nelson's orchestra on the "Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia of Jazz" Verve LP.

And so it began ...

Default Introduction to Mr. Woods

Hey Treb,

I'll post here and start a new thread too. My Woodsian virginity was lost on "This Is How I Feel About Jazz".....who's that guy quoting "Teach Me Tonight"?, asked I......and the rest is history.

Default Solo of the Day

I hope I am not repeating an already mentioned solo, it's tough to keep track of all the submissions. So pardon me if this one has been previously submitted.

I just love Phil's work on Invitation from An Affair to Remember. Great energy in this rendition from the band. The arrangement's interplay between Phil and Brian is superb. Incredible how full 2 horns can become. The solos are classic. Full of inspiration. What a wonderful treatment of this standard. Most times I have heard this, it's been in a straight four, sometimes latin but this 6/8 approach pushes the song to new levels.

And there's "Our Love Affair," from the film "An Affair to Remember."

One would think there would be many more tunes titled -- or at least inspired by -- "An Affair to Forget."

But maybe that's just me.

From "Birds of a Feather," how about "My Old Flame"? The entire LP is comprised of what I like to think of as "miniatures" in the established artistic tradition. There is a less-is-more quality to the proceedings, one born of a maturation to which no shortcuts exist.

If brevity is the soul of wit, then you know what a solo twice as long would be.
