For you real Phil collectors out there..."Kiss Me First" from Neal Hefti's "Pardon My Doo-Wah"....when they figured out that Phil was indeed "Mr. Saxophone".

There is a tasty Phil solo I listen to a lot...just pulled it out today.
On- " Latin Kaleidoscope" by Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland big band. ( on Prestige recs ) The solo follows Tony Coe..on " Strano Sueno ". Phil must of done this on arrival to Europe in 70. Or so. He sounds just fantastic. Very much like the Oliver Nelson " Jazzhatten Suite".The one with all NY cats from late 60s and solos from Phil and Zoot etc. And btw- my fav writer Gary McFarland wrote 5 of the 6 dances on L.K. You can hear those melodys Gary wrote years after you heard them IMHO. Another cool Phil solo - is " Reets Neet" on " Three For All" ..with Red Mitchell and Tommy Flanagan. from 81'. Phil sounds very hip on clarinet on this on too. Swinging and fresh. |

My suggestion for the day is "The Stanley Stomper" from Phil's "Pairing Off" CD. In addition to a great set of blues choruses by Phil, we get the bonus of a nice Gene Quill solo as well.

I have always loved the pairing of Phil's playing and interpretation with Latin flavored songs. So with that in mind, I submit for the top of my song list, Menino das Laranjas from the Floresta Canto album.
This has been a favorite of mine. Check it out if you can still find a copy of this LP. Hopefully they will reissue this on CD just so we don't lose it. |

I have really enjoyed having the radio link and listening to Phil as I surf the web. White Christmas is soooo cool! One of the best renditions of holiday music I have heard. Which LP is this tasty morsel from?

There have been suggestions for other tracks off "Round Trip". My suggestion for the day is "Guess What" featuring Phil with Jerry Dodgion. Anyone know what Jerry is up to these days?
