Default The Thrill is (Not) Gone

If you have it, listen to Phil's CD on Venus "The Thrill is Gone" today. If you don't have it yet, get it. What could be better than that great sound with a lush string background? Add Charlap, Goodwin and Gilmore and you can't "Get Along Without (It) Very Well". I love Phil's "And When We're Young" but, once you get started with this one, why not listen to the whole CD?

Love and peace,

Rev

....."The Pawnbroker" from the new Q project. This is my solo of the day, along with "Quintessence", "The Midnight Sun....", "For Lena and Lennie"...
it's impossible to pick just one. You'll see.

It's available at the Phil Woods store. NOW!!

Love and peace,

Default MAD ABOUT MADELINE

Friends,

One of the fringe benefits of going on about Phil's finest efforts is the opportunity it affords to spotlight his worthy constituents.

Now I'm the first to admit that the sublime Madeline Eastman is an acquired taste -- but so too are scotch whisky (find a bottle of 12-year-old Springbank, and be amazed), Ornette (bring a LOT of scotch and something to smoke it down with), Warren Commission debunkers and carne de porco alantejana.

Phil's guest shot on Mad's exploration of "Freedom Jazz Dance" finds him in the presence of a vocalist who, faced with the challenge of going toe to toe with our man on a tune he's owned for decades, acquits herself with authority, vigor and vaulting musicality.

By all means visit Madeline's website www.madelineeastman.com and hear for yourself. On other CDs she has been joined by Tom Harrell, Kenny Barron and -- dig it -- Tony Williams.

Indeed, the aforementioned pianist and drummer are present on a with-trio CD spurring Mad madly in a version of "Gypsy in My Soul" redolent of Coltrane -- so much so that Kenny and Tony turn in McCoy-esque and Elvin-esque solos respectively that are at once honorably derivative, smile-inducing, and stylistically right-on in the context of the singer's Trane ride.

Phil says it all about KB on the "Soul Eyes" CD -- It doesn't get any better than Barron.

God bless Tony Williams.

Give Madeline Eastman a listen. You'll thank me.

Default I Remember

Let's go back to one of Phil's classics today. My vote for solo of the day today is from the "I Remember" album....."Paul"

It just doesn't get any prettier than this!!

Default I'm writing to myself....

....as you know, I'm now from the midwest...Indiana to be exact. My fear is that the world came to an end and we just haven't heard about it yet here in the middle of corn country.

Where the hell is everybody?? Treb?? Phil?? Anybody??

I figured that most of you out there are kind of dead anyway...since nobody has posted any responses to the Bud Shank--Centrum thing as yet. Isn't anybody else "mad as hell" about this?

C'mon guys and gals. Let's get some activity going here.

If anybody is out there---my Phil's solo of the day is "Goodbye, Mr. Evans" from the "Celebration" CD. Truth, beauty and the American way.

Love to you all (if you are indeed out there).

Default I'm here

Hi Rev,

I'm here (although I'm out on the left coast). Been awfully busy and was having some posting problems. Let's see if this one goes through.

Good suggestion re: Goodbye Mr. Evans. When we're done listening to the Celebration version, I suggest we listen to the duo version with Enrico Pieranunzi on "Elsa".

Default Goodbye Mr. Evans

While we're at it, Phil also plays great versions of Mr. Evans on "The Colossal Saxophone Sessions" (Evidence) and with the SWR Big Band (hanssler). If you're looking for either CD, let me know and I'll happily supply more information. They're probably listed in the discography at this site as well. (Great job, Gar and Jill!!)

I love Scott Hamilton's treatment of the tune on his strings album too.

Scooby, happy you're still here in Phil World.

Default Stockholm Sweetin'

Stockholm Sweetin' is my suggestion for the day from Phil's latest release on Jazzed Media. A great arrangement (it still has the arranged Clifford Brown solo in it like Q's original arrangement) and a very nice solo from Phil (sax players on the board can contact me if they want a transcription -- I was so excited about getting this CD yesterday that I learned Phil's solo right away!).

Default Phil with the girls

I have to admit that some of my favorite Phil solos are with the girls. Why not?? For today I'd recommend Phil's CD with Barbara Casini (available at the store--Phil in Italy Chapter 2). Stefano Bollani is wonderful on piano. Start with "Fotografia" but don't stop there. It's a great CD!!

Love and peace,
