Benny Carter was my friend.

I once asked him how he managed to sustain a career for over seven decades and he said: "Phil! Only go first class!"

I thought I would be clever and continued;
"And only play with economy?"

His eyes twinkled and he said: "Phil! You should have your own TV show!"

His widow Hilma always called me the Prince.
